Heather and I rolled into the driveway last night/this morning at half-past midnight.
Ignoring the 10-hour drive, the weekend getaway was amazingly successful and fun.
On Friday we left the house at 6am, arrivied in the northern bay area around 6pm – we meandered our way down. We eventually found our way to
Saturday we rose and breakfasted with
Party arrived and fun was had. Everyone was great. I need to quickly add a Mojito to my specialities – I made a few pretty crappy ones. There’s more to go on about that I won’t do here and now, it really deserves a post of its own (and a filtered group!). Smashing. It was fab to meet everyone face-to-face; it makes the gossip and the cast of characters much easier to follow now. 😉
Sunday we had a little going-away brunch at Halley’s in Petaluma (fried plantains, yum) and we came back to Portland.
Despite the most excelent people in the bay, I came back to portland with a firmer resolve about the choice to leave. I’m thrilled to be home.
Glad to hear y’all made it back safe.
The glass I got from El Meson de Pepe in Key West claims they make their Mojitos like so:
MUDDLE:
1/2 lime
Sugar
Yerba Buena
Dash bitters
ADD:
Ice
2.5 oz. Rum
top with club soda
SHAKE & ENJOY
I can’t make one to save my life, though.
Who in their right mind tells you to add club soda before a shake?!?!?
Hello! Carbonation? say good bye. I mean, what are you adding the club soda for if not carbonation? the H2O dilutes, but you also want the fizz.
Yerba Buena instead of Mint is intriguing. I like the recipe otherwize. I would prepare it the same, except I would add the club soda after shaking and stir.
I saw a mention this morning of a New Orleans dish of fried plantains WRAPPED IN BACON. BACON!
For a long time I naively thought Yerba Buena was weed.
If I could make Mint Juleps, Vicki would love that.

And the Great NorthWet is glad to have you.
Same drink, replace rum with RYE (or bourbon, I suppose) and ditch the club soda & the lime.
And we need to visit Vancouver!
It was great to meet you this weekend and we still have sour mix in the fridge. I think it is going with us to Poker night tonight!!!!
Yes!
I’ll probably be making a kamikaze run to Powell’s in a couple weeks, so maybe you guys would be available for coffee?
It was great meeting you guys…soooo glad we went to the party.
Hugs to both of you!
It was reat to see you!

Aww, that makes me happy! I’m glad you are digging your new home.
You can do the most amazing things with that stuff. Even teetotaling. Heather likes to make lemonade with the mix and club soda.
Poker Night? Waaa. Craig wants a poker night! I’ll try not to pout too much.
Luckily, SF is close enough to visit often!
Plus, you must come up (and tell Pablo he’s welcome too)!
yep! As long as it isn’t the weekend at the beginning of April…
Indeed! The evening went by far too quickly.
Don’t worry too much about poker night. We don’t play for big money. It’s penny ante. But damn we have a good time.
I’d love to come!
It was so very excellent meeting you and your fantabulous wife. It’s good to be happy with your choices and I’m happy for you, even though I can now say that I am resolutely grumpy at Portland for stealing you and so many other cool folks away from the Bay area.
I have to say that portland certainly feels like it’s where it’s at… It is a hard sireen call to ignore.
I have been looking for an excuse to buy the green bottle of Beam and guess that’s it.
I’ll give it a try.
Wait, are bitters the same as Angostara[sp]?
Yeah, that is one brand of bitters.
There is peychaud’s as well (which you _must_ use if you make a sazerac, which is like an old fashioned with absinthe&rye)
