Tolkien 101

Rock and Roll.

The class will (at least) cover:

Hobbit
LOTR
“Leaf by Niggle”
“On Fairy Stories”

and touching on:

The Silmarillion
History of ME

Professor is awesome.

Downside:
Class is huge, full of the usuals.

Upsides:
Both TAs are nice (and cute, that doesn’t hurt) who will be team-teaching-critiquing.

Fun! I’ll be forced to do real reseach on a topic that I have wanted to, with a group of people who will support me. I hope the TAs aren’t bitchy.

Good all around.

  1. I’ll bet a lot of the usuals will drop out once it starts to get hard (assuming it does).

I think we ought to be more worried about you getting bitchy.

  2. Enjoy!

I made my 7th grade reading class research Tolkien when we read Fellowship…

    quite inneressing…..

    Hope i see you soon!

  3. …”skarrin”.

Now I’m this pretentious monstrosity (but it accurately describes me, I think, FAR better than “skarrin” does)

And I’m *sooo* jealous, I may have to come to PDX and kick you around some.

AFTER asking many questions about what you’re learning, of course. 🙂

  4. Nice to see you back.

It is mainly going to be pedestrian, I’m sure – discussions of major themes, comparative lit, etc.

I’ll post online my drafts and other fun things that are going on.

For instance, today we tore into the first few paragraphs of the Hobbit, and I found an interesting thing – a sense of “middle, balance, centering.”

Not only do hobbits prefer roundness (doors, houses windows) – they are ’round’ people, a hobbit hole is neither dry nor wet, but in the ‘middle,’ as is their doorknobs. Roundness abounds.

Also, they are literally “down to earth” in that even through their shodless feet, they touch the ground. they have “fruity” laughs. They live in earth, they farm in earth, the are the color of earth (brown).

Just little things like that – pretty keen.

  5. Sounds like fun.

I just missed a Kubrick class at my college, (Cause I didn’t go in the fall.)

Have fun, although…how can you not?

  6. Isn’t it amazing how a subject we’re delighted to know stirs the senses? Practicality…well, that’s another thing, ain’t it? ;o)
