I fell in love with this drink at a wonderful place called “Zig Zag” in Seattle:
The Last Word
—————–
¾ oz. Gin
¾ oz. Green Chartreuse
¾ oz. Maraschino Liqueur
¾ oz. Lime JuiceStir with ice in mixing glass, strain into cocktail glass.

The deranged mind of everyone’s favourite ne’er-do-well

the zig zag is a magical, wonderful place. and murray should be designated a national treasure.
That sounds yum!
Maybe when I come by to visit Budgie, you can make me one. 🙂
What is Chartreuse, anyway?
Chartreuse is a botanical/herbal liqueur that some (disparagingly) call “pine sol.” In the same arena of Jagermeister, but less heavy of a flavor. It is much stronger, though.
I love it.
It [the liqueur] is also the source of the name of the color. Things are chartreuse colored because they match the hue of the liqueur.
It’s definitely on the ‘short list.’
Ew, gin! But if you made it, I would drink it.
I’d rather have a Dark Magic though. MMMmmmMMMMmmmmMMMmmmMMMmmm Would you come over to my house and make dark magics for me if I promised you fantastic filet mignon and wasabi mashed potatoes?
I like Jager, and that stuff looks tasty. Gonna have to try some of that “Elixir of long life”.
My discovery of new booze is usually pretty slow, so I wouldn’t be surprised at all if my two latest pleasures were old news to you. But anyway, I have been enjoying Bulliet and Bendistillery’s Cascade Gin lately.
Certainly!
I’d love to try that Cascade Gin, sounds nifty. I’m well acquainted with the bourbons. 😉
Do you mix? Drink Neat? What’s your poison?
Let’s set a date then! (and register our china pattern) Oh my, you have made me the happiest girl in the world! And Erick too, he’s a happy girl! You should invite your wife and she can be a happy girl too. OH HAPPY! OK that’s enough of me, I have to get to work. 😉
BITD, I drank my scotch neat, but now it makes me sick for some reason. Bourbon is about the only whiskey I can handle anymore.
Since I have been such a puss with the heartburn and sickness with alchohol, I mostly mix. It seems like a sin to put premium bourbon in carbonated drinks, but damn, it sure tastes good. I have tried the Bourbon in 7up, Mountain Dew, Pepsi, and Ginger Ale. It sounds gross, but I love Bourbon and Dew. I hear loads of folks cut their whiskey with water, but I have never tried it.
The gin I have had in Dew, with 7-up and straight. It tastes different that other gins, very junipery, (Or at least I imagine thats what it is, having never actually tried to ingest juniper.) I got some Grenadine Saturday, and this weekend I think I am gonna buy some Chartreuse and Lime and try that “Last Word.”
I like to make pretenses at mixing, but usually I am far to lazy and just take the Joe Sixpack route of tossing booze at Cola.
The only drink I have made that folks seem to like is a
Dr. ButterBeam.
Butterscotch Schnapps
Jim Beam Black
Dr. Pepper over ice.
No idea on the serving sizes, I usually put more schnapps than bourbon in it. I find the syrupy carmely nature of all three fluids seems to work well. Another sweet bourbon, (As opposed to a dry one like Maker’s Mark,) would probably work just as well if not better, but Jim Beam Black is often the best under $50 bourbon you can find in a military store, so that’s what I used.
Care to share any bourbon mixes?
I love to use a “perfect manhattan” to show off a bourbon, and when we’re slumming it, it’s always a bourbon and 7.
Perfect Manhattan:
3 oz bourbon
1 oz sweet vermouth
1 oz dry vermouth
1 dash bitters
1 dash maraschino cherry juice (from the jar)
shake above w/ice, strain into cocktail glass, maraschino cherry garnish.

Now about that last word – the Maraschino liquor has nothing to do with Maraschino cherries. It’s like a sweetened Marasca cherrystone grappa.
Bitters. Still haven’t got those from when you posted your Mojito recipe. Vicki always gets into the Vermouth, so it never lasts too long.
As for Grenadine versus Maraschino liqueur, I suppose Jacquin’s Grenadine is not the right stuff then. Oh well, it was cheap, and goes in tons of things, and unlike Rose’s actually has booze in it.
I am gonna have to stock up on stuff, most of what we had before the move got drank or tossed into a homewrecker size Bacardi bottle that we call Hell Mix. Still getting used to the whole state-run liquor store. It just isn’t right going into a Trader Joe’s and not being able to get booze.
