So:
I’m stuck in a long spiral of general resentment and ennui in my work situation.
Anyone have cheerleader-type advice for me?
Basically, I’m in a position where I am working below my ability, doing things that I should be far beyond. It was ok for a while, but any help on how to deal with this (while looking for another position?)
I don’t want to have to be this resentful/defensive/unhappy, but it seems it is in my cards? Any help playing the hand?
I don’t have any really good advice, and I’m probably too close to give it anyway. But I sent you some jobs @nwtiki. Please don’t be angry with me if they say something about user support in the small print.
hey, at least you were nice enough to reply.
I don’t have any advice. I’m going through the same thing. The only thing I’ve been able to do is address one particular situation head on. So that may help but it may not.
Deep Breaths help…sometimes.
1) Let go and try to find a different perspective. E.g.: you’re creative, you’re smart, and they’d be stupid not to use it.
2) Don’t keep it inside, but try to communicate your disenchantment to a superior or HR. They can’t help if they don’t know there’s a problem.
3) In the short term make sure that you have positive and constructive things to do in the rest of your life, like Tiki-church. That’ll also make it easier to let go.
Thanks – my thoughts are with ya in your own like stuggle 🙂
Thanks, great advice. I think a good deal of resentment is the underlying nature that I support creative people, yet have no foreseeable chance at being creative myself (because I’m too busy keeping the damn engines maintained).
If it’s a career shift you’re looking for, that’s one thing, and already covered that angle. If you’re merely hoping to while away the time, I highly recommend picking up a side project, either work-related or not, so you have something to look forward to working on during your spare cycles. That did wonders for me during the Mot days.
Blair sez take your Cert. tests!
I have vouchers and books and software for you to load freely upon! All paid for.
It’s making me feel better that my experience has a backup now.
Oh, and test #2 DOWN. I am now (or will be once notified) a Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician. 1 more XP and 2 Server 2k3 from MCSA. YEAH!
It feels good. I should call you. Calling you feels good too. Yay Craig!
I got nothin’ practical, but I want to tell you that I’ve been there, and I feel your pain. It sucks to be squashed in your job, creatively or otherwise. I think nanne had really good advice for you.
Plus you are fabulous and I am trying the roasted cauliflower thingy tonight. =) I’ll let you know how it turns out and if it is as great as I think it is maybe I can hire you as my personal chef/bartender/decorator when I get rich enough. Would you be interested in such a position? Benefits include tits and hot tub access. Bring the wife.
A) get your boss fired. I know, it’s crude, but it’s a logical way of getting promoted.
B) end every sentence at work with “in accordence with prophecy”. Cryptic, yes, but at least something interesting will happen.
C) Move people’s user accounts around, and have everyone play “Musical Macs”.
can you tell that humor is the only psychological response that I have for negative situations. I would have to agree with Dryad271, unless your a Bush, we’ve been there. I have a lot of possibly useful connections in Portland, let me know what you’re looking for. There is an ever so slight chance that I might hear about something.
I’m in the same place bub. 🙁
good idea – I’m on that. I’ll see what the next test I should take would be.
I chucked it all and decided to open a tiki bar.
This may not be practical advice.
We had a great idea for a gay tiki bar! I mean, gayer than your usual tiki bar.
Except I think that opening a bar is sort of postponing trouble, not solving it.
