The future evolution of the Catholic church will affect the society you live in, directly or indirectly. 3. If you have no emotional involvement/investment in the society you live in, you are a sociopath. 4. A sociopath is generally thought to be a Bad Thing, whilst not being a sociopath is generally thought to be a Good Thing. 5. Therefore you should care about the identity of the pope.
