  1. Wow, that’s so cool! I feel so out of it for not knowing about this since February… So thanks!

I’ve always felt that some sports had no reason not to be co-ed, golf, pool, bowling… there must be others. Glad to see someone’s actually forcing the issue again.

  2. The over-under for her out of the Las Vegas oddsmakers was 76. She shot a 71. Most people think she won’t make the weekend. Last year it took a 143 to get to Saturday, so at 71 she is well on pace.

    The ass-kickin has already commenced.

  3. There’s not really an issue being forced here. The PGA has no gender requirements and never has. The hubbub over Augusta last year had alot of people screaming that it was invitation only so they felt Augusta had every right to invite whoever they wanted to. This particular tourney is also invitation only so now that a woman has been invited they know they have to keep their mouths shut or they’ll show themselves as hypocrites. At present time Annika has had 10 invites to PGA tournaments so its not like it isn’t happening (albeit slowly), the women are usually just choosing not to play. Annika chose this tournament because she felt it provided her the best chance to perform, as it is comprised of mostly short greens where accuracy is much more important than length.

The only person who has said anything negative is Singh who said that she’s taking a spot away from someone who could use it. Which means he’s either completely ignorant or is really a total mysoginist because Annika is a corporate sponsor slot. That means they get to invite her without her having to qualify. There are 12 of these sponsor slots available for this tournament, I believe 8 got filled. Generally, corporate sponsor slots get filled with anything from amateurs they wanna give a chance to play in the big leagues to guys in the business who just wanna play in a major. Annika will almost certainly outperform any of these other 7 guys in corporate sponsor slots but we don’t hear anyone complaining about them “taking a place away from someone who deserves it.” So the one guy complaining about Annika is just a real asshole. As is anyone else complaining.

Most players and just about everyone in the crowd (having watched the round) is really behind her. Mickelson really wanted her to play this game and Woods has said he hopes she plays in more PGA tourneys rather than just this one like she’s saying. I also hope we see her again.

  4. Hey, you probably know this:

Okay, so at the weekend they take the top half (at this tournament anyway, I don’t think it’s always half…). Being golf, there are always ties. So if ten people are tied for say 54th place do they let all ten people play on the weekend or do they cut it off at 53rd place? (assuming by half they meant half of the 114 contestants)

Because, I’m nervous. I finally found a site with the leaderboard And currently she’s tied for like 70th. I know she could play even better tomorrow (god willing) and there’s always only a couple strokes between making the cut and getting really close, but I’d like to hear you say that if there’s a tie, it will work in her favor, because she needs all she can get right now. I mean at the moment, she’s only one stroke out of the cut….

I really hope that no matter what happens she takes them up on more invitations in the future. She can go back and hone her skills in the LPGA all she wants, out of the spotlight, but I want the best women players out there competing with the men. It would make it such a more interesting sport.
Though, I’m not sure I can explain why. Just to give me some new underdogs to cheer for, maybe.

  5. Is it wrong that I’m sitting here clicking on that link, going “hit those bogeys, hit those bogeys” to everyone who’s left on the course today?

Do the higher seeded players play earlier in the day? Please say yes, and that all these currently Even or better players who’ve only shot 8 rounds will drop lower by the end of the day…

  6. I’m actually not that much of an expert on golf but I believe as far as I know, Yes Virginia, a tie will work in her favor. The cut happens at a certain score not at a certain place, so if she’s tied with 20 other people at the cut line when it is announced she will get through just like everyone else with that score. Right now things are looking tight for her. She needs another good day, another +1 probably will drop her out of the running, an even day might do it but a birdie or seven would be very welcome.

I think she can do it, she has the marks of a successful long term player. She played a _very_ consistent game today which is a good sign for her chances tomorrow and from her attitude and absolutely charming smile she seems to really be taking everything really well. There’s a whole lotta stuff swirling around her right now and she played an excellent game.

Personally I feel even if she doesn’t make the weekend she’s already made a huge impact for the ladies in golf. I don’t know why so many women have declined invitations to PGA tournaments but I suspect that part of it is a fear of losing big and having sponsors drop you. Annika has shown them all that even a middle of the road performance as a woman on a PGA course right now will bring out the best in most of the crowd and the home viewer audience. Hopefully she and some of the other women will take notice of that and start taking the risk. And even if they don’t take notice, their sponsors certainly will and will start wanting their ladies to play in the PGA games. Also she’s kinda shown that the women are really catching up to the men in golf right now. Ask your average redneck why women shouldn’t play and he’ll tell you they’re weak and can’t make the drives for the courses. Annika outdrove both her male partners today and had a drive of 286 yards which is really respectable.

I would like it if more women played too. Not because I think women are fundamentally or equilaterally different in their play and would add some new aspect to the game that we haven’t seen before, but simply because a larger player base invariably makes a sport more interesting since more competition forces people to play better. The top 20 players have played each other a million times. If we had a few more people playing a high level game then everyone would’ve only played eachother half a million times. The leaders would be a little more uncertain in the face of those wildcards.

  7. You make a lot of good points, Thanks for facilitating my obsessiveness on this at this instant, too. 🙂

Her consistency is really what enables her to take this plunge. Because the thing about golf is, that most of the players who don’t make the cut in any given tournament were also capable of winning or getting really close on another course on another weekend. So, even if she has an off day tomorrow and takes another one or two strokes, it really doesn’t say, “no she shouldn’t be here.” If she wins, that speaks volumes, but doing poorly doesn’t have the same impact.

I think you put the case for why women in golf would be good for the sport. I just get really annoyed not getting to see the best play the best. I so desperately want to watch it in tennis too, mixed doubles just doesn’t cut it. I don’t want to watch just half of the best players at a time, even if that half (the men) turns out to be more like 3/4 of the best players, I don’t care, I want to see all of them.

  8. “Friday’s cutdown after 36 holes from 114 competitors to 70.”

Finally found an article where they list the number for this tournament, woohoo! I mean, yes, they can’t cut it in the middle of a tie, but 70 is a lot more easily in her grasp than 57 would be. I mean yes, par or better is what she needs tomorrow, and every stroke counts, but it looks a lot more likely now. Woohoo!

  9. I always thought that as a private organization, the folks at Augusta could invite whomever they wanted…

What I’d really like to see is all the people who clamored for her to be included to step up to the plate and campaign for the poor queer mountaineers to be allowed back into the Boy Scouts of America.
